This is normally the time of year we announce our plans for the next Nerdtacular. Usually that involves venue plans, early ideas, and a rough idea on when it will happen! Instead, got something a little different for you.
Let’s get the short description out of the way: There will not be a Nerdtacular in 2016. Now, DON’T FREAK OUT! There’s a lots more tale to tell, so keep reading.
There are a few things at play here. First and foremost, it occurred to the team that we’re fast approaching the 10 year anniversary of Nerdtacular, which began in the spring of 2007. That means we want to take some extra time and plan something special for the next one. That gives us an extra 12 months to build something truly rad for 2017.
Secondly, as it turns out, 2016 is PACKED full of new projects for me and others on the team. Kim and I are writing and illustrating a parenting book, something we’ve wanted to do for ages. Now that the kids seem to be forming fully baked and reasonably well adjusted, we think we actually have a thing or two to say on the subject.
2016 is also the year we build and finish the “Dungeon Murder” tabletop card game we’ve started. We’ve come a long way on that, and the big work is about to begin.
Add to that a children’s book project I’ve been brewing for quite some time, and you have a year of specialized focus that would surely benefit from not having to build a big event in the middle of it all. Of course, this is all in addition to the continued growth of podcast and video projects, and everything else you like about the Frogpants world.
Thirdly, I feel like the management team and all the producers could use a break from the crazy before we hit it hard for the 10th event. A nice breather before 2017 and we full tilt again.
I know some of you are saying, “Oh man! This was gonna be the year we finally made the trip!” To you I say, “hey, just think of all this extra anticipation! Absence makes the heart grow…something something…” 🙂
Nerdtacular has grown from its obscure humble beginnings into something pretty special. Thankfully, it kept the humble part and stayed personal, and we will never likely stray from that core value. “It’s like family, ‘cept with nerds”, our slogan goes. True in 07, and true now.
Best part? I might ACTUALLY take a real family vacation in 2016. Weird, I know.
OH, and before I forget, there is something cool happening! This might be more beneficial to locals of course, but I am planning on going old-school and renting a movie theater next June for the premiere of the Warcraft movie. Working out the details now, but would love to host some of you guys for that in a big theater…my treat. More details on that as I have them, but very much looking forward to what will basically be Nerdtacular Jr. that day. 🙂
